"The Houthavens, including the Minervahaven, are among the oldest parts of the Port of Amsterdam. Originally nothing but wood was stored here for over a century, but at present the area is rapidly transforming into a residential and working area. This development marks the completion of one of the largest projects in the city: the redevelopment of the south banks of the River IJ. In the coming years 2.000 homes and some 100.000 m2 of non-residential functions will be realized here.

Minervahaven will be the port-city interface for years to come. To the west, harbour activities will continue, the area borders on the Spaarndammer neighbourhood to the south, and the renewed Houthavens to the east. This interface between the old and new city and the harbour is also reflected in the design for Loft Office. We took full advantage of this location’s strong point – the view of the water and docks – with a completely open facade. To achieve this, the large glass windows in the facade haven’t been set straight but at an angle (as in a ship’s wheelhouse) to cancel out annoying reflections of the glass.

The result is a completely transparent building. The rear of the building, which faces south and the existing city, is different. Almost as a matter of course wood was chosen as main material, but it also has much smaller windows with shutters that in the same time serves as blinds. This side of the building is in keeping with the image of old warehouses and the old city, while the windows offer a framed view of the city. The building is raised with the offices located above the car park. Loft Office also refers to the industrial origin of this area. It’s not an office building with traditional office spaces; it’s an open plan office with a large open space at the centre of the building. This not only provides views of the harbour and the city, but also of the activities inside the building."
